Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Milk Recipe
Equipment
- High-speed blender
- Nut milk bag or thin dish towel
- Jar or bottle
Ingredients
- 1 cup raw hazelnuts
- 3 large medjool dates pitted
- 4 cups filtered water
- ¼ tsp sea salt
- 1-2 Tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract optional
- 3 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder
Instructions
- Soak the hazelnuts and dates in a small heat-safe bowl covered with boiling water for at least 30 minutes, or overnight.
- Drain the hazelnuts and dates and add them to a high-speed blender along with the filtered water. Blend until creamy and smooth, for at least 1-2 minutes.
- Strain the mixture using a nut milk bag or a thin dish towel.
- Rinse the blender and pour the strained hazelnut milk back into it. Add the salt, maple syrup, vanilla extract (optional), and cocoa powder (or cacao powder). Blend until well combined, about 1 minute.
- Taste and adjust if desired, adding more maple syrup for sweetness or cocoa powder for chocolaty goodness. Transfer milk to a jar or bottle, seal, and refrigerate. The milk will keep for up to 4-5 days, though best within the first 1-3 days. Shake well before drinking.
Notes
- This recipe is vegan, gluten-free, and naturally sweetened with maple syrup and dates.
- You can adjust the amount of maple syrup to your taste.
- If you don't have a nut milk bag, you can use a cheesecloth.
- You can use store-bought almond milk instead of making your own.

Whipping Up Your Own Creamy Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Milk
Ready to try your hand at making your own vegan chocolate hazelnut milk? It’s easier than you might think! There are two main methods: the homemade method and the quick method.
-
Homemade: If you have a bit more time and want the freshest, most flavorful milk, go the homemade route. You’ll need to soak raw hazelnuts overnight, then blend them with water, sweetener (like maple syrup or dates), cocoa powder, and a pinch of salt. Strain the mixture through a nut milk bag or cheesecloth, and voila! You’ve got yourself a batch of creamy, homemade chocolate hazelnut milk.
-
Quick: Short on time? No problem! Grab your favorite store-bought hazelnut milk (unsweetened is best), add cocoa powder, sweetener, and a pinch of salt, and blend it all up. It’s that simple! You can even experiment with different flavors by adding vanilla extract, cinnamon, or a dash of espresso powder.
Get Creative with Your Chocolatey Hazelnut Milk
Now that you’ve got your delicious vegan chocolate hazelnut milk, the possibilities are endless! It’s perfect for pouring over cereal, blending into smoothies, or enjoying in a cozy cup of hot chocolate. You can even use it in your favorite baking recipes, like cakes, muffins, or brownies. Feeling adventurous? Try making a creamy chocolate hazelnut milk ice cream or pudding. The only limit is your imagination!
Storing Your Liquid Gold: Tips for Keeping Your Milk Fresh
To keep your homemade or store-bought vegan chocolate hazelnut milk fresh, store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container. It should stay good for about 3-5 days, but always give it a sniff before drinking to make sure it’s still fresh. You can also freeze it for longer storage, but the texture might change slightly upon thawing.

If you don’t have the time or inclination to make your own, you can find vegan chocolate hazelnut milk at most grocery stores, usually in the health food section or alongside other dairy alternatives. You can also order it online from various retailers.
